Celebrate New Year's Eve in Cairns... and let's start 2012 with a bang!
Carnival: Society Bar & Nightspot get in the Rio theme for New Year's Eve.
THE Far North is ready to cast aside the memories of a turbulent 2011 and welcome 2012 tonight with a monster party.
Whether you’re spending it with family, dining in one of the region’s restaurants or partying the night away in clubs and bars, you won’t have any trouble finding something to keep the good times coming this New Year’s Eve.
Cairns Esplanade and Fogarty Park are the hub of the Cairns Regional Council’s free celebrations, with live entertainment from 6pm and two massive fireworks displays at 9pm and midnight.
Australian guitar guru Diesel and his band are headlining the event, which also features The Doyle Family Fun Show, Eddie Skiba, Vikarious, Bree and The Bopstars, Drum Up Big and more.
Esplanade events officer Prue Johnson said about 10,000 people were expected to head to the Cairns waterfront tonight.
Ms Johnson said despite last year's grey skies on New Year's Eve, about 10,000 people turned out to watch the fireworks and headliners The Black Sorrows.
“If the weather clears up, we could get more than that,” Ms Johnson said.
For those looking to dine ahead of their festivities, most restaurants are offering special New Year’s Eve menus and packages, but it is advised you book ahead to avoid disappointment as it will be one of the busiest nights of the year.
If you plan to head out on the town after the fireworks, start thinking about your fancy dress plans, with most inner-city venues opting for a themed event.
Society Bar and Nightspot is turning it on with a Brazilian Rio Carnivale vibe, while Gilligan’s and The Attic want you to
party as your favourite rockstar at the GTV Video Music Awards.
Salt House Restaurant and Bar will be in 1920s theme based around F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, while Velvet Underground will be transformed into a Moulin Rogue-inspired burlesque fantasy with London cabaret queen Miss Polly Rae.
The Union Jack has a big night in store with a London’s Calling Glitter Ball, with a chance to win a ticket to see Cold Play live in England, while The Reef Hotel Casino’s big free party will kick on to 5am with live bands Mrs Smith and TOPShelf.
Finally, if you’re looking to escape the hype of town but still party the night away, Fitzroy Island Resort has limited tickets to see Chocolate Starfish in Foxy’s Bar at their New Year’s Eve Beach Party. Contact partyincairns.com to book.
