Queensland waits for Premier to call election
QUEENSLANDERS may have to wait until school resumes before Premier Anna Bligh calls the next election. Are you looking forward to the election?
Pressure has been mounting on the Premier to set a date for the election, with LNP leader Campbell Newman already declaring the election campaign had started.
The election must be held no later than June 16, but Ms Bligh refused to speculate on a date during a visit to Cairns yesterday.
"I know that people will want to endlessly speculate about the next election," she said.
"It will be held as close as reasonable to the full term anniversary of the Government. But I don’t intend to enter into guessing games.
"People are getting back from holidays, they’re getting their kids back to school and I’m going to let them get on with it."
Ms Bligh focused her energies last week on flood commemorations, but Deputy Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls tried to remind the Government of a promise made three years ago not to scrap the fuel subsidy.
"Today’s anniversary of (Treasurer) Andrew Fraser’s broken promise on the fuel subsidy is one anniversary Labor doesn’t want Queenslanders to remember," Mr Nicholls said.
"Anna Bligh and Labor don’t deserve another chance. Not this time."
Whenever the election is held, it will mean the end of Government backbencher Julie Attwood’s political career.
Citing personal reasons, the parliamentary secretary for health and Mt Ommaney MP became the ninth sitting Labor member to quit politics.
Ms Bligh said she didn’t expect any further resignations from her team.
