Female songstresses sing sweet tunes for celebration
THE Songbirdz have landed and a wealth of female musical talent will flow through The Reef Hotel Casino%u2019s Australia Day celebrations today.
Based on the success of last year’s Australia Day Flood Relief fundraising event, entertainment manager Bruce Stewart said those celebrating at The Reef will have "non-stop musical entertainment" from 2pm until 11.30pm tonight.
To accompany a variety of activities lined up from midday, local and nationally renowned festival favourites Kelly Moran (Sweet K), Belinda Butler, Fleur McMenamin, Rachel and Emily Bradley, Kim Hurley, Jacqueline Larsen (Orange Avenue), Nikki Doll, Roz Pappalardo and Carinda Christie will grace the Vertigo stage with a mix of original music and Aussie classics.
Fleur McMenamin (pictured far right) and Kim Hurley are two such songstresses who will delight Cairns music-lovers with their talents. Last year, Fleur achieved great success with her brother through their duet act The McMenamins.
They recently returned from their first US tour, and won their second Queensland Music Award with the song Umbrella Town. They’ve had the honour of supporting Angus & Julia Stone and The Waifs, and have enjoyed shows at the Woodford Folk Festival, Tamworth Country Music Festival and the Tablelands Folk Festival. The pair draw on alternative country and folk influences, employing mandolin and violin driven instrumentals to complete their original acoustic music.
As an emerging artist in Cairns, Kim hails from Melbourne and is no stranger to live music as part of acoustic duo Easy Pickings. Thanks to a RADF grant, Kim recently unveiled her debut solo EP, Letters to Letty, which features a repertoire of diverse originals with a contemporary folk and rock edge.
As part of the Australia Day celebrations, The Reef Hotel Casino will also feature casino prizes and giveaways, Summer Bright Lager specials and traditional Aussie
fare including pies, lamingtons and specials in the Flinders Bar & Grill.
