Cyber Citizen: Tanks Arts Centre's social media queen Julie Johnston
THIS web-savvy Far North Queenslander does a fantastic job promoting our internationally renowned rainforest arts venue to the world, a job made easier by the internet.
The web provides a channel of communication with the rest of the world, quickly (most of the time), cheaply and instantly. It’s running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, connecting us with people, even if they are half a world away. When I was at uni the “internet” was a new beast that our lecturers told us to be wary of: how times have changed! Today I can’t imagine living without the web, it’s intwined with every aspect of our lives, from researching a holiday, to booking a show and staying in touch with friends. My husband is a web developer in Cairns, so we definitely couldn’t live without it.
At Tanks, the web is a fundamental part of our daily activities. Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter provide open, two-way communication with our fans, artists and other arts organisations, connecting Tanks with the arts industry, locally, nationally and internationally. In particular, we love to share the tunes we’re listening to, posts and insights from our artists, music videos, news and exhibition pictures.
We want our social media pages to be a platform for engagement and entertainment, an extension of our venue. We love the interaction, it’s so open and can be shared with everyone else. Websites, our own and others, promote gigs and events, sell tickets and provide interesting, historical information on our venue and its people. At Tanks, and across the arts industry, social media is recognised as one of the most valuable communication tools we have, and if you aren’t using it already, then get online or get left behind!
Who in Cairns utilises the web well? Tanks’ three favorite local websites (not listed in any order): entertainmentcairns.com for its comprehensive listing of local, musical talent; ticketlink.com.au, a great online directory of a diverse range of upcoming regional events; cairns.qld.gov.au for complete info on everything that’s happening in the region, from community events to news and public notices.
