CAIRNS wakeboarder Matty Hasler has etched himself into the history books with a record 1260 manoeuvre at Boardstock 2012 in Penrith.
World Wakeboarding Association Australia director Dalai Liddy said it was the first move of its kind performed in Australia and potentially the world.
"It’s hard to tell worldwide, because you don’t know what people are doing in their backyard but it was definitely the first we’ve seen here," Liddy said.
Chris Flaxman used his iPhone to capture Hasler performing the 1260 heelside flip.
The video shows Hasler getting air off a ramp and doing a three-and-a-half full spins before landing in the water to rapturous applause.
"It was pretty insane, everyone was on the their feet and yelling and screaming and everything," Hasler said.
He was as surprised as anyone at Cables Wake Park when he landed the jump.
"It was the first time I ever tried it," he said.
"I’ve always wanted to try and land one. I had done a couple of 10s (1080s) and I thought ‘why not just try a 12 for the sake of it’.
"When it landed it was just insane."
Liddy said Hasler’s impromptu 1260 was typical of the development of the sport.
"The thing about wakeboarding is that people didn’t even know this was possible," she said.
But the 1260 was not good enough for Hasler to win the Boardstock Championship. That honour went to Thai champion Daniel Grant.
Hasler finished third, behind his boyhood hero, Tom Fooshee. Hasler was named Australian Male Cable Rider of the Year and his girlfriend Angelika Schriber was named Australian Female Rider of the Year.
