Taipan Kerry's little team grows
KERRY Williams will have one extra set of lungs, all be them tiny, cheering him on as the Taipans surge towards another NBL post season.
With the birth of son Isiah last Friday, the Cairns man now has two young sons.
Dad joked they may one day take after his father and occupy the Taipans' back court.
But laughs aside, Williams is just happy he and partner Sharon Lawrence had a safe delivery and that he was not stuck on the other side of the country when it happened.
"The little guy's been pretty good so far," the proud father said.
"We went into the hospital on Friday morning (before Friday night's game against Perth in Cairns) and I played that night. It made it easier that it happened during a home game; I was worried I may not be there for the birth."
But he was, and then his team demolished Perth later that night to keep the Taipans' momentum
rolling.
And when Townsville lost to Adelaide later in the round it put the Snakes into fourth and the Crocs back to fifth.
That will only make them a tougher prospect, Williams said, when Cairns travel to the Crocs' home
tomorrow night.
"They've had the better of us down there for a long time and we're playing for finals spots, so it's a huge game for us," Williams said.
And not having been a part of the Taipans' finals campaign last year through injury, the back-up point guard is keen to taste it for himself.
"Yeah for sure, and the guys all really do believe they can get there again and beat those top sides in a finals series," he said.
"We've been winning on the road and we have had some well-rounded efforts from the starters and the bench."
He said there was no added pressure of facing a home crowd full of familiar faces, having grown up playing for Cairns as a junior.
"It used to be a bit nerve-racking but I'm used to it now," he said.
The Taipans back up from tomorrow's game in Townsville with a home clash against the Melbourne Tigers on Saturday.
Wins against both sides would be incredibly advantageous in terms of the top four, considering they sit fifth and sixth and need to make up ground on the Snakes.
