Taipans sack Deba George
THE Cairns Taipans last night sacked point guard Deba George for an undisclosed breach of the club's code of conduct.
George, a Cairns junior, joined the Taipans roster this season but has had limited court time.
The 26-year-old played in Friday’s 32-point loss to the Crocs in Townsville but was not included in the squad for Saturday’s 77-56 victory over the Tigers in Cairns. In a statement last night, Taipans general manager Marc Beecroft said George had been released from his contract, effective immediately.
Dean Brebner will move into the active player roster to replace George.
In other news, star import Jamar Wilson says he feels responsible for his side’s huge defeat by the Crocs.
"I’ve got to step it up and (in Friday night’s loss to Townsville) I didn’t," Wilson said.
"If I would’ve come out a lot stronger I think we would be in a different place right now."
"I think we would’ve been talking about how well our weekend went and not how controversial it was."
Wilson is not bragging, he is just echoing what the stat sheet says.
When Wilson is off his game, like he was on Friday night against Townsville and last month against the Gold Coast, his team suffers.
Against the Blaze on January 29, Wilson shot an abysmal two of 11 from the field and had no assists, no rebounds and just five points in nearly 32 minutes of action.
On Friday night against the Crocs, he was only marginally better, going three of 10 from the field with only one assist, two rebounds and seven points in 27 minutes.
In those games his team has scored 49 and 43 points respectively and lost by a combined total of 59 points.
On Saturday night, Wilson came back to form going 10 of 19 from the field, with two assists, seven rebounds and 25 points in just over 31 minutes.
His team responded by scoring 77 points in a 21-point win.
"The more I’ve been playing, the more of a role I’ve taken with the team and the more responsibilities, I have to make sure everything run smoothly," he said.
"To be one of the guys who’s logging some of the most minutes on the team, I have to be one of the guys who’s performing."
The question on everyone’s lips is whether Wilson will be able to perform against Perth on Sunday.
Cairns are sitting in fourth position on the NBL ladder, but the Gold Coast Blaze are breathing down their necks in fifth spot.
