20 Questions with Tim Rogers
Tim Rogers flies in direct from the US to the Tanks Arts Centre this weekend with his Trio, but not before 20 quick questions with timeOUT...
Where are you right now? New York City. How do you drink your coffee? Real strong. Triple espresso, first thing. Sluice ‘o milk. I’m high on the hog.
Wine, beer or spirits? I enjoy all at the appropriate time, appropriately.
iPod, CD or vinyl? For home or visiting someone, I love “rekurds”. But I’m away more often, so I’ll take what I can get. Mixtapes too.
Favourite place to relax? On a train. Or walkin’.
Least favourite place to relax? Turbulence.
Favourite thing on an in-flight menu? Oh anything. I love airline food and drink. In whatever form. Reminds me of my grandpa bringin’ mini-cokes to us in Kalgoorlie from Melbourne.
Finish this sentence: “If I weren’t a musician, I would be... An unorthodox leading man. And at a loss....”
Favourite Trio that’s not the Tim Rogers Trio? The Johnny Burnette Trio, or Rush, or the Hard Ons. Or Venom. Or The Shaggs.
Most interesting thing to happen in Australia this year? When I get home I’ll work on it personally.
Worst thing to happen in Australia this year? Agonisingly typical reactionary backlashes.
Favourite Australian celebrity and why? Shaun Micallef, Paul Capsis or Felicity Ward. Charm and talent. And not a whiff of “celebrity” conceit.
Favourite band no one has heard of? NightStreet. 100 per cent positive, 100 per cent of the time.
Favourite riff you wrote? Beefy Jock Guys and Modern Dance Music. (on my new record). Or The Ocean.
Favourite riff you didn’t write but wished you did? Better Git It In Your Soul by Charles Mingus.
First thing you do when you get off the stage after a show? I like a small drink and 10 minutes alone to feel sated. Then I start thinkin’ how I could do better. That first 10 minutes is usually beautifully exhausting.
Last thing you do before you get on stage for a show? No rituals. Maybe listen to some hot “toons” and dance.
Favourite memory of Cairns? A You Am I show at the Tanks. Simply, unexpectedly, loose and fun as all hell.
Least favourite memory of Cairns? No bad memories. Always happy to be there.
We’re in 2012. If it were all to end here and you had to pick your last meal on earth, what would it be? A barbecue in Cedillo de la Torre with my daughter.
>> The Tim Rogers Trio are at Tanks Arts Centre on Saturday night, from 7.30pm. Tickets are $35/$30, at ticketlink.com.au or 1300 855 835.
