Council continues to oppose Gordonvale Woolworths
CAIRNS Regional Council today voted to maintain its refusal of the proposed Woolworth development at Gordonvale citing concerns that the development would have a "detrimental economic impact" on the town centre.
Mayor Bob Manning said the decision was made based on evidence provided by all parties and was in the "best interest for the future of the region."
"We have made an informed decision based on the facts at hand," Cr Manning said.
"Council does not treat these matters lightly, which is why we held briefings and workshops to gain a full understanding of what is a complex situation.
"We are not shutting the door to commercial development in Gordonvale and Council will work with any developer to progress a proposal that meets Planning Scheme criteria."
