THE FNQ was named Queensland's top regional soccer centre after sweeping six age divisions at yesterday's regional Queensland selection trials in Townsville.

Teams from the FNQ were crowned champions of the under-12s, 13s, 14s and 15s in the boys and the under-12s and 14s and under-14s in the girls.

The region also had a record 30 youngsters named in elite age group squads.

According to Brisbane Roar youth league coach John Sine at least six or seven of those players would be good enough to immediately play in elite academies in Brisbane.

"The under-14 age group was especially strong, I would love to have some of those players in an academy in Brisbane," Sine said.

Sine said he was impressed by the standard of soccer he saw in his scouting trip to a regional centre since taking over the Roar youth league coaching job.

"What I'm seeing from some of the Cairns players is a testament to the coaching they receive up there," Sine said.

As the head coach of the national youth team, Sine is also responsible for selecting players from the age of 14 to enter the Roar academy, where they are developed.

He had not travelled to regional Queensland in the past because the Townsville-based Northern Fury covered the area.

He was so impressed with what he saw in this trip he was already talking about implementing a Roar academy in Northern Queensland.

While the plan is in its infancy, Sine seemed to suggest Townsville would be the likely candidate because of its facilities and centrality to other centres.

"With the demise of the Northern Fury and Gold Coast United it's important that we set up some kind of academy in North Queensland," Sine said.
