Athletes chase shot at glory in Cairns

ATHLETES from around the world descended on Barlow Park yesterday for the opening day of the Oceania Athletics Championships.

The three-day event, which is held biennially, has attracted more than 400 competitors from 25 countries to the Far North.

The championships continue today, with one of the highlights set to be the showdown between the national Australian and Japanese 4x100m men's relay teams.

London gold-medal hopeful Dani Samuels will be competing in the open women's discus tomorrow.

Events today start at 11am.
