Cairns just misses Guinness World Record for Largest Ukulele Ensemble... again.
Despite drawing close to double the numbers from last year, Cairns has fallen just short of breaking the world record for largest ukulele ensemble at Fogarty Park today.
Cairns Ukulele Festival organiser Gaby Tomasz said 1395 official participants strummed their way through the official song Travellin', lead by Nicky Bomba, Bustamento, Paul Hemming, Seaman Dan and Cairns Pan All-Stars.
The official number was far more last year's total of 811 (which fell only 41 short of the 2009 London world record), but since last year's festival, a new record has been set in Sweden of 1,547, meaning the people of Cairns again have come up short.
You could hear the collective sigh of disappointment as Ms Tomasz announced the news to the crowd, who braved windy and damp conditions on the Esplanade during the entire event.
"We fell short of the record in Sweden, but at least we beat the Poms," Ms Tomasz said.
However, all was not lost.
Nicky Bomba plans to use footage from the attempt in his film clip to the official song Travellin'.
