A MASSIVE search is under way for a man missing in suspicious circumstances near Palmerville, west of Cooktown.

Bruce Gavin Schuler, 48, is believed to have disappeared while prospecting along the Palmer River near the Palmerville Station on Monday.

He was last seen at about 10.30am on that day.

Police were alerted to the incident on Monday night by people who had been prospecting with Mr Schuler and a search has been under way since Tuesday morning.

Cairns police Insp Peter Mansfield said the search would resume at first light this morning.

"It is a large scale search," he said.

"We are conducting aerial and ground searches and these will continue for the next few days.

"The distance, remoteness and terrain are presenting considerable challenges to the search.

"This is a serious investigation."

Insp Mansfield was unable to confirm details on why there was suspicion surrounding the case.

However, he said police were interested in speaking to anyone who may have information regarding Mr Schuler's disappearance.

He said a range of resources were being used in the search including helicopters and police on horseback and quad bikes. Members of the State Emergency Service and other volunteers are also involved.
