THE sound of revving engines screamed into action last Saturday, as some of the region%u2019s best motocross riders fought it out during round three of the Tropical North Queensland MX Series.

About 130 competitors from Mt Isa to Mareeba descended on to the Cairns Motorcyle Club track at Cairns International Speedway for an action-packed day in the dirt. And it didn’t disappoint, with a total of 11 classes competing – from seven and eight-year-olds riding miniature 50cc bikes to the raw power and speed of the four stroke monsters in the professional Open Championship.

"It was a flawless day … there were no dramas," Cairns Motorcycle Club race secretary Jacinta Sabin said.

"We had some really good feedback on the track, it’s the best it’s been in a long time."

Holding a total of six rounds across the region, Ms Sabin said the annual series was a great boost for junior talent and development in the Far North.

And it seems that talent is already shining through, with Edmonton brothers Mitchell and Richard Evans dominating the competition in the junior lites category. Mitchell, the current 12-13 years Mini Lites Queensland Motocross Champion, said he loved the thrill and adrenalin of racing motocross.

"It’s really fun being able to go so fast and trying to get faster to do those big jumps," he said. The 13-year-old, who was runner-up at this year’s Australian titles, is one of only two riders selected to represent the country at the FIM World Junior Motocross Championships in Bulgaria on August 12. Tully played host to round four of the series on Sunday, with round five to be held in Charters Towers on July 28.
