CAIRNS teenager Mitchel Cave, 15, is riding the wave of fame with his boy band What About Tonight receiving "the best X Factor audition reaction ever" in Sydney recently.

The Cairns State High School student said his experience with the Channel 7 show was incredible.

"The whole audition itself was amazing, there was a frenzy of screaming girls for at least five minutes," he said.

"We had all positive comments from the judges."

Mitchel and the other members of What About Tonight, who are from Melbourne, Sydney and the Gold Coast, formed the band in May this year after discovering each other's musical talents through YouTube channel ClintonCaveMusic.

Born and bred in Cairns, Mitchel comes from a family of talented creatives, with his brother Taylor studying film and television at Cairns High while his older bother Clinton is in Brisbane studying music.

Another recent musical highlight for Mitchel was singing at the Opera House last year as part of the Gondwana National Choir and his mum Brigette Cave said the family were all very proud.

"It's something he is very passionate about, it's a dream come true," she said.

After a weekend on the publicity trail in Sydney, Mitchel and What About Tonight were interviewed on Today Tonight last night and will perform on Sunrise tomorrow.

Channel 7's The X Factor kicks off at 7.30pm on Monday.
