Cairns-based aviation firm huge global player
THEY evacuated rockers Joe Cocker and George Thorogood from Cairns as cyclone Yasi bore down, have ferried film directors around the Bahamas and arranged refugee flights but you won't find them blowing their own trumpet about it.
Independent Aviation may be Cairns-based but the company which normally prefers to fly under the radar thinks global.
But it wasn’t always that way, managing director Ian Button said, as the aviation charter company celebrated the move into its new Sheridan St offices.
"The company has grown from a couple of blokes working out of the back of a house in 1989 handling a couple of flights a week," he said.
"Last financial year we did more than 4500 charters."
Mr Button said while people were surprised a global player was based outside of major metropolitan centre it had no impact on the business.
"We don't promote that we operate from Cairns but when asked we tell them and they simply love Cairns," he said.
"There is certainly no business cringe factor as we come from a small centre. If you can provide the service, they will use you."
