Cairns Gold Medal winner Murgha signs with Pride
RECENTLY-crowned Cairns District Rugby League Gold Medallist Brian Murgha will try his luck with the Northern Pride next season after signing a trial contract with the club yesterday.
The Edmonton Storm and Cairns Marlins five-eighth had an outstanding season and took home the CDRL’s top gong at its annual awards ceremony on Friday night.
Pride CEO Chris Sheppard said Murgha had the potential to strengthen his side.
"He’s a natural leader, a very smart footballer who makes those around him better, and he’s someone who deserves a shot at a higher level," the CEO said.
"He also brings a bit of utility value being able to play 6, 7, 9 and 13 if required."
Murgha pipped two-time winner Steve Singleton of Yarrabah by a point to win the Gold Medal with 18 votes, while Ivanhoes forward Tom Lynch finished third after polling 16.
