AUSTRALIAN shepherd puppy Skeeter gets teased for his big ears, but they haven't stopped him from becoming a winning show dog.

Four-month-old Skeeter, who lives at Gordonvale with his owner Belinda West, took out first place in the baby puppy category at an Ingham dog show on the weekend.

Ms West said she decided to enter Skeeter in The Cairns Post’s Pet Pageant competition after a friend commented on his large, fluffy ears.

"One of my friends kept teasing me about how big his ears are and everyone said ‘You should put him in the photo competition’," she said.

"We would definitely be able to spend the winning vouchers. My boyfriend is in the process of making a kennel, but I don’t think it will eventuate."

Skeeter plays rough with his furry fox toy and also loves swimming in the Mulgrave.

"We have a sandpit thing in the backyard and he likes to bury himself; he does it all the time, it’s silly," Ms West said.

Categories are Cutest Pet, Funniest Pet and Best Dressed Pet. Winners take home vouchers worth $1500 each.

The Cairns Post thanks major sponsor Pet Cafe for its support of Pet Pageant.

Entries close tomorrow (Friday). Jump online to cairns.com.au/competitions and upload your picture.

Don't miss The Cairns Post's special Pet Pageant liftout on September 26, featuring the best entries from the online pageant gallery.
