Taipans choke Crocs in Townsville
THE Cairns Taipans have won on the road in Townsville after defeating the Crocs at home 92-80 in over-time.
It was nearly a scary repeat of last Sunday, but the Taipans have escaped with a crucial win against the Crocodiles in Townsville on Friday night.
Up by 13, thanks to a huge 27-point third quarter, the Taipans again squandered a lead to give the Crocs hope of their first win of the season.
They did enough to force it to overtime, and in the following five minutes outscored the home side 15-3 to win it 92-80.
The Snakes looked home after a Clint Steindl (10 points, four assists, three rebounds) inspired third term but just like last Sunday against the Kings, lost their way down the stretch.
A Jamar Wilson (25 points, nine rebounds) jumper in the final stages of normal time looked to have sealed a three-point win.
But his opposite number Gary Ervin (23 points, four rebounds, seven assists) replied with a triple.
The Taipans regrouped though, scoring the first 11 points of the extra period to square their season record at 3-3 and cosign the Crocs to their sixth straight loss.
Cairns 92 (Wilson 25, Gliddon 17, Tragardh 11, Edwards 11, Steindl 10, Loughton 10) def Townsville 80 (Ervin 23, Blanchfield 12, Crawford 12)
