Last chance at Cannon Park for Miss Rubinstein

VETERAN trainer Wayne Massingham wants the real Miss Rubinstein to stand up one last time.

After running in today's Open Handicap race at Cannon Park, the six-year-old mare will return to Melbourne to stud.

It will mark the end of what has often been a frustrating 12-month stint at the Massingham stable.

She arrived from Victoria with big expectations, following a highly successful stint in North Queensland by her brother Lord Rubinstein.

After winning her Cannon Park debut by five lengths, it appeared she would follow in her sibling's footsteps, but it was the only first she mustered at Cannon Park.

Success did not completely evade Miss Rubinstein. She twice won in Townsville but too often frustrated the new owners.

"She won one in Townsville (on May 29 this year) and the jockey (Shohei Kaya) said: 'That's the real Miss Rubinstein that you saw right there,' " Massingham said.

"On her day, she's capable of winning a lot of races. She's got a lot of ability; she just hasn't always performed."

Massingham liked what he saw before today's race, although that is a trap he has seen before.

"You don't really know what you are going to get out of her," he said.

"But I think she's ready for a good race.

"She is running well, but she's a funny mare, she'll do her own thing."

If Miss Rubinstein performs, Massingham expects her to take out the 960m sprint.

The biggest threat may come from Ralph Baker-trained sprinter Morossa, who drew the inside barrier and was impressive before a recent spell.

"It's a decent field out there," Massingham said. "But if we see the real Miss Rubinstein, I think she'll have it covered."
