FORMER Cowboys player Rod Jensen was never a bloke to throw a punch on the field, but give him a pair of gloves and a boxing ring to stand in and the hesitancy quickly disappears.

The Northern Pride Learn, Earn, Legend program manager is one of the Far North rugby league identities taking part in Footy Fight Club at Brothers Leagues Club tonight.

Hosted by No.1 contender for the IBF middleweight crown Sam Soliman, the fight night is a fundraiser for the Northern Pride Academy and will feature representatives from Cairns District Rugby League clubs and the Pride entering the ring.

Jensen did not hesitate to volunteer his pugilistic talents, having boxed as part of his training throughout his professional league career.

The 33-year-old, who has been appointed player-coach of Mareeba for next season, said boxing had always interested him.

"I've always enjoyed it. I follow it quite closely even though I never thought about taking it up as a sport," Jensen said.

"I remember growing up and watching Mike Tyson fight.

"There's that fitness side to it, but it's also the dedication and the mental toughness it takes to become a pro fighter that appeals to me."

In the future, Jensen plans on becoming an accredited boxing coach so he can work with young people interested in the sport.

"Particularly with a lot of the mentoring we do (at the Pride), it's something that young guys can do to vent their frustrations," Jensen said.

"It teaches discipline and they can turn it into an art form."

Footy Fight Club tickets are $10 at the door. Corporate tables are still available and can be secured by calling the Pride on 4046 0500.

Doors open at 6pm, with fights starting at 7pm.
