My perfect weekend

What does Hambledon House Community Centre co-ordinator Kylie Bock do with her time off?

I spend weekends with my partner, Peter Firth, and my daughter, Kelsey.

I also enjoy catching up with friends.

My daughter is in several choirs and dance classes so we have quite busy weeks and weekends. My partner is a folk musician and he does a lot of gigs around.

I love going to folk music festivals and I love going to Taipans games.

Peter is the president of the Edmonton Community Gardens, and has a couple of plots, so we spend a lot of time there.

My perfect weekend is a combination of all of these things.

I love going to music-related activities, I love gardening, and sailing. I love to go sailing to Fitzroy Island with friends.

On Fridays after work, I usually have a date with Better Homes and Gardens. It is a no-cook night for me, which is something I have had for years with my daughter.

My partner is a fab cook so he might make something or we will go to a Taipans game.

On Saturday mornings, I usually catch up on the weekend papers, and we have coffee with friends or by ourselves. I’ll get a bit of shopping in then and go to the community garden where I have some vegies.

I’ve always enjoyed gardening. It’s a great family activity.

We host international homestay students and bring them down to the lagoon, or go to Port Douglas, or go to visit friends on the Tableland. The community gardens is usually a first port of call and they absolutely love that.

On Saturday night, we might go to a Taipans game or a music gig or go out for dinner.

On Sundays mornings, we will have a late breakfast, usually read the papers again and listen to music. My favourite music is Australian folk.

Kelsey might be doing something with friends. If we have a student, we will visit the markets.

Later we will go to the community gardens again.

The rest of the day is spent getting ready for the week. I do long hours in my job, so we have to schedule what each other is doing.

I’m the co-ordinator of Hambledon House, which delivers family and community support and specialist counselling.

On Sunday evenings we tend to sit around and Peter plays guitar. We all sing.

Kelsey is 15 and is in Teen Soul Song, and Peter and I are both in Soul Song. We practise during the week.

This Saturday we are singing at the Soul Song annual concert at CoCA. There are up to 75 of us. I’ve been in it for 18 months.

We all share a love of singing and it is a great release from a stressful week. We do a whole heap of performances and will be doing Christmas carols. I don’t play a musical instrument but I sing and keep time with the shakers.

I’m a travel nut and I do a lot of research for trips. I have been into travel since I went to Bali on my own when I was 18. It was quite an outrageous thing to do at the time.

I have lived in PNG, travelled to China, I’ve been to Vietnam three times, Europe, the UK, New Zealand, Fiji and Vanuatu. I regularly go back home to Perth in Western Australia.

We love to go to the Port Fairy Folk Festival in March every year. That’s where I have my emotional and social recharge.

I used to love reading but I don’t have time anymore. I might get the Better Homes and Gardens magazine but I’ll still be reading it when the next one comes out.

My favourite way to unwind is to go to the community gardens. Even just splashing the water on the plants at home is relaxing and a real relief.

I love my dogs, maltese shih tzus, and they adore us. We love to take them around the place.

We also enjoy our wine and we have a really big wine collection. I like anything from the Marlborough region in New Zealand and from the Margaret River. We did a great trip in May for a week to the Marlborough region.
