SCORPION bites, dehydration and sunburn might be enough to put off most people going outdoors, but it hasn't deterred thousands of revellers from descending upon Palmer River for the Eclipse Festival.

The unique event is expected to attract more than 10,000 people throughout this week, with QAS operations supervisor Neil Noble impressed by the atmosphere.

"It's a very fun, vibrant, festive mood," Mr Noble said.

"There's alternative lifestyle music, there are stalls there that sell crystals, incense and muffin cakes.

"There's lots of dreadlocks and lots of gypsy clothing on sale."

Around 10 paramedics, 20 first aid workers, lifeguards, fire crews and police are all on hand for what is expected to be a lively festival, with a patient having already been medevaced via rescue helicopter to Mareeba Hospital for treatment on Sunday.

QAS has also deployed a Tactical Medical Centre at the Palmer River Roadhouse alongside police units stationed there.

Mr Noble urged people to stay hydrated by drinking two litres of water a day.

He also warned festivaldhgoers to wear plenty of sun protection, with the festival itself continuing until Friday, November 16.

"The ambient temperature there is between 36 and 37C," he said.

"It's extremely dry."
