THE first Test may have proven the one that got away for South Africa, but batsman Jacques Rudolph has found a way to make amends.

He and assistant coach Russell Domingo have packed the sunscreen and fishing rods and joined trainer Brandon Jackson and former player Paddy Upton on a charter boat off Port Douglas for a few days.

The boys have teamed up with local skipper Damien Colette and have spent the last two days hunting trevally, trout and other big game on the Great Barrier Reef and by all accounts the fish are biting far better than the Australian batsmen were.

"Another great day out at sea. @RussellDomingo reckons he should be banned from the reefs, catches to many fish," Rudolph tweeted on Wednesday.

Domingo added: "Amazing day on great barrier reef. Skipper damien colette put us into some amazing GTs! Memorable day."

The boys will spend a total of four days on the water before heading down to meet the rest of the team before the start of the second Test in Adelaide next Thursday.

By the looks of the big smiles and big fish, they may be a little reluctant to leave the Far North.

Most of the Proteas team have scattered across Australia after coach Gary Kirsten told his side to enjoy the nine-day break between Tests and reassemble on Sunday.

Kirsten has travelled back to South Africa in accordance with his contract which states he will not spend more than 30 days away from his family.
