A desperate search is continuing near Silkwood for a man who hasn't been seen since leaving a pub in Silkwood late on Friday night.

Police briefed about twenty State Emergency Service personnel this morning and immediately began an intense search of cane fields to the North of Silkwood where a signal from 46-year-old Roderick Lewis's mobile phone signal was last  picked up.

The Emergency Management Queensland Helicopter joined the search this morning, scouring cane fields and crocodile inhabited creeks near where Mr Lewis was last seen.

Mr Lewis was intending to head home in a southerly direction from Silkwood to El Arish when he was last seen by a family member.

Sergeant Greg Batt from Innisfail Police, who is helping coordinate the search told SES volunteers that Mr Lewis's mobile phone had been "pinged" to an area North of Sikwood within a range of about 1.5km, which is the area the search is now focussing.

Rodderick Lewis was last seen walking from a pub on the corner of Edward St and Silkwood Rd just after 10pm on Friday.

It was believed he was heading towards El Arish, but failed to return home.

The man has not been in contact with family or friends since and police hold concerns over his whereabouts.

He was last seen wearing a straw brim hat, a white t-shirt with comic images on the front, tan checkered board shorts, thongs and carrying a hessian bag.
