1pm: A $1.4 billion resort in far north Queensland has been approved by the State's coordinator general.

Approval for the resort at Ella Bay, near Innisfail, has been sought by the proponents for seven years.

Special access road conditions and tunnels have been granted to attempt appease concerns over cassowaries.

The resort, based on land in a national park that was previously used as a cattle property, includes residential precincts, a retail village and a golf course.

Approval now is required under Federal environmental laws for the resort to proceed.

Premier Campbell Newman said the resort would provide jobs and be a boost to tourism.

"A project of this magnitude, catering for tourists as well as permanent residents will be a wonderful economic boost for the community, both locally and further afield," Mr Newman said.
