THE Kuranda Range Rd has reopened to traffic after a truck carrying a load of sand crashed into an embankment this afternoon.

Earlier, the truck had been lying on its side, blocking three-quarters of the road, with its sand and gravel load strewn down the range.

QAS operations supervisor Kev Morgan said the 35-year-old driver of the truck was being transported to Cairns Base Hospital in a stable condition with a leg injury.

“He’s very lucky. He had burns to his lower leg from something in the cabin,” he said.

The truck crashed into an embankment near a hair-pin bend on the Smithfield side of the range.
