Delta Goodrem has universal appeal in Cairns
HER new album proclaims her a child of the universe, but Delta Goodrem is now a darling of the Far North too after dazzling local fans during a rare visit to Cairns.
Thousands packed Smithfield Shopping Centre yesterday to catch a glimpse of the singer as she played songs from Child of the Universe and her previous albums, which have sold more than six million copies around the world.
Goodrem has returned to the spotlight this year with a hosting gig on the hit talent quest The Voice and her first record in five years, which has held a prominent place on the Australian charts since its release a month ago.
Fourteen-year-old fan Mitchell White was the envy of the crowd when he was pulled on stage to dance with Goodrem.
He had waited since 9am to secure a prime position in the front row.
"It was definitely worth the wait," he said, naming Wish You Were Here as his favourite Delta song.
"She's such a great singer and I like how she believes in other people and she doesn't just think about herself. She was only meant to perform three songs but because she was late, she did a few more."
