POLICE have delivered a warning to anyone taking to the water after a kayaker failed to return home from an afternoon sea kayak trip on Sunday.

The 37-year-old Clifton Beach man did not return by nightfall after setting off around 3pm, with police eventually locating him at a Taylor Point campsite around 3am.

Cairns police Sen-Constable Russell Parker said this was a prime example of why it was vital people notify friends and family of travel plans.

“Anyone involved in marine activities or adventure sports really needs to let people know what their plans are because if they fail to return, they can be very difficult to locate,” he said.

“They should provide family and friends with details about where they’re going and how long they’ll be gone to avoid police having to undertake these searches.”
