Kaitlin flies the surf girl flag for Cairns
FOR the first time in more than 10 years, Cairns Surf Life Saving Club has a Jupiters Summer Surf Girl entrant in local Kaitlin Paterson.
Running since 1964, the Jupiters Summer Surf Girl program is one of the largest annual fundraisers for Surf Lifesaving Queensland, having raised $12.5 million to date with entrants from Cairns to the Gold Coast. The James Cook University biology student, 19, who is fundraising and spreading surf safety awareness in the Far North before final judging at the Gold Coast in May next year, said she was thrilled to be involved.
"The Summer Surf Girl program is a wonderful opportunity to be an official ambassador for Surf Lifesaving Queensland," she said.
"Judging covers elements such as core lifesaving skills and knowledge, as well as community spirit.
"I'm pretty nervous, but it will be exciting."
A part-time lifesaver at the Cairns Esplanade lagoon and northern beaches, Paterson hopes her efforts, including a doorknock this weekend, will contribute to surf club resources. For more information, email surf.admin@cairnssurfclub.com.au.
