Manoora man charged after allegedly assaulting police

8AM: A 33-YEAR-OLD Manoora man has been charged after a police officer was allegedly assaulted in Cairns overnight.

Police attended the intersection of Spence and Lake Streets just after 7pm last night following reports of a number of people drinking liquor in a public place.

It is alleged an altercation took place as police spoke with the group, resulting in a man punching a male Constable in the head and knocking him to the ground.

The officer was transported to the Cairns Base Hospital but has since been released.

The 33-year-old has been charged with serious assault and obstruct police and is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.
