TAFE visual arts on show
Some of the best work from this year's talented visual arts students from Tropical North Queensland TAFE are on show at galleries across the city this week.
During their course work in 2012, TAFE students have been studying drawing, painting, assemblage sculpture, mixed media work and ceramics in Visual Arts and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Arts programs.
The original and individual pieces created by the students involve a wide variety of processes, materials and diverse concepts.
The first of exhibitions - Old Style New Images - is currently on show at Cairns Regional Gallery.
It features a dynamic collection of paintings, prints and textiles created by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander visual arts students.
Over at c.1907 Contemporary Artspace in City Place, Aggregate features contemporary works by visual arts students, while TAFE's own Banggu Minjaany Art Gallery will launch new exhibition Visualeyes tonight, a collection of visual arts and contemporary crafts.
Finally, Friday will see a huge pottery sale in R Block, giving you the chance to take home original works by students across the entire TAFE arts program.
Faculty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies manager Leanne Bell said the TNQT visual arts courses provided students with skills and techniques that would help them find employment within the visual arts industry.
"These exhibitions are very important to the personal and career development of the visual arts students," Ms Bell said.
"TNQT courses give students a solid foundation from which to explore and develop their individuality and personal approaches to art."
