THE long arm of the law extended a helping hand to animals in need yesterday, as six Cairns police officers got to work at YAPS

The boys and girls in blue helped YAPS volunteers secure a new exercise yard and clean out one of their storage containers.

Cairns CIB detective Sergeant Sheridan Heaton said it was an easy decision to organise the volunteer police group, with two of her own pet dogs adopted from YAPS.

"They're a fantastic organisation and the dogs need homes,'' he said.
"They need to be fostered over Christmas, and there's actually three people from my office who are going to foster dogs.''

YAPS treasurer Carol Clifton said any help was appreciated, especially over Christmas.

"It's fantastic. These are bigger projects, especially this exercise yard,'' Ms Clifton said.

"We're busy caring for the animals and we just desperately rely on a working bee like this to get projects like this done for us.''

Members of the Young LNP also attended the working bee to assist with the police volunteers.

It is hoped yesterday's volunteer work could eventually turn into a regular event.
