ON the 12th day of the 12th month last year, Tammie Thornton met the love of her life.

Six months later he told her he loved her; another three months after that he got down on one knee and proposed; three days later they decided to round out a whirlwind year with a wedding.

And when she and fiance Scott Verrall tie the knot at Palm Cove today, on 12-12-12, it would seem the lucky in love couple have played the numbers game and won.

"I kind of knew I wanted to marry him on the second date, but I had to play it cool though and not be too full-on,'' 36-year-old former Australian soccer representative Tammie said.

"For me personally, I said we're both in our late 30s, I don't really want a three-year relationship followed by a two-year engagement.

"If you know what you want, I think you should just go for it.''

The pair were living about 1000km apart when they first made contact through a dating website, Tammie in Cairns, while Scott had just begun his own business in Gladstone.

"Scott was travelling through Cairns at the time and made the effort to make the call and said did I want to catch up for coffee,'' she said.

"I told him 'yes, after my Pilates class' so I rocked up in my Pilates gear and had coffee.''

They kept in touch online before work saw her relocate to his home town for several months. She will make the permanent move after the wedding.

Scott's two-year-old daughter Charlie will be a flower girl as they are surrounded by about 50 family and friends to exchange vows on the Palm Cove sand.
