One Far Northern police officer suspended, another resigns following sexual misconduct allegations
BREAKING NEWS: One Far Northern police officer has resigned and another has been suspended over allegations of sexual misconduct.
The two officers - both aged 25, from the Far Northern policing region - are facing an internal disciplinary investigation into their behaviour while off duty.
"One officer has since submitted his resignation," police said in a statement yesterday.Comment is being sought from Police Commissioner Ian Stewart, who says there's a strong case to strengthen powers so officers can be immediately sacked in the worst cases of wrongdoing.
Mr Stewart is opposed to the current disciplinary proceedings, saying it can take months to sack officers who have clearly committed offences.
He wants a new system that would allow the immediate sacking of police who'd clearly committed "quasi-criminal" and serious offences.
