Girl, 13, accused of trying to rob Cairns taxi driver

Cairns police have charged a 13-year-girl with attempted armed robbery after a taxi driver was allegedly threatened with a screwdriver by a group of youths that demanded money from him.

The incident is alleged to have happened at a Robert Rd address at Bentley Park on Sunday about 11.50pm.

A police spokesman said the taxi driver had picked up a fare involving a group of youths and one of the group has produced what appeared to be a screwdriver and demanded money.

The driver refused and the group left the taxi without any physical harm coming to the driver.

A 13-year-old Mooroobool girl has been charged with one count of attempted armed robbery and will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justices Act.

Investigations are continuing.
