THE three Fs - fun, family and free - are the key to Cairns Regional Council's annual New Year's Eve celebrations on the Esplanade.

Up to 30,000 people are expected to line the waterfront on Monday night, to catch the two big fireworks displays from 9pm and midnight, and a top selection of local live entertainment.

Large marquees will line the Esplanade so you can enjoy the celebrations no matter the conditions, alongside a huge selection of activities for the kids including face-painting, all-weather jumping castle, roving performers and a special late opening of the Lagoon, with swimming allowed until 9.30pm.

Musically, some of Cairns' best local live musicians are on board for the night, kicking off with Chris Ah Gee, Marcus Cappellazzo and Amy Chase Band from 6pm, followed by a headline show from the six original members of popular party band Funky Love Tank, with support from Mr Smith, Tara Tucker and DJ Smooth-e after the 9pm fireworks. In addition, City Place will come alive with two shows from popular local outfit The Eddie Skiba Band from 8pm and 11pm.

Always one of the biggest family-oriented entertainment and social events of the year, don't miss your chance to celebrate with the rest of the city and see out the rest of 2012 in style at Cairns Regional Council's New Year's Eve on the Esplanade.

Cairns Regional Council's New Year's Eve celebrations are on Monday night, from 6pm-late. Entry is free. For the full program of entertainment, see cairnsesplanade.com.au
