Saxophonist Andrew Butt hits Bernie's Jazz & Piano Cafe

Award-winning Queensland jazz saxophonist and educator Andrew Butt is returning to Cairns for a one-off performance at Bernie's Jazz & Piano Cafe on Abbott St tonight.

Andrew is a stalwart of the Queensland jazz scene and in 2012 has performed with numerous national and international jazz artists including James Morrison, Emma Pask, Tom Burlinson, David Campbell and John Riley from the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra based in Greenwich Village, New York.

Originally from Cairns and now based in Brisbane, Andrew is an ex-student of both St Augustine's College and Trinity Bay State High School and was a member of the Cairns Youth Orchestra and the Cairns Concert Band under the baton of his teacher and mentor Bob Favell.

He has also performed as a soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Tommy Tycho and featured as a soloist in 2011 on the Enthusiastic Musicians Orchestra's release One for B, currently available on iTunes.

He is also currently in the mastering stages for his CD Here & Now, due for release on iTunes early in 2013.

Andrew holds qualifications in Music and Music Education and has just completed a masters degree in jazz performance and research at the Queensland Conservatorium.

As an educator, he has worked extensively as a clinician and teacher in the state, private and tertiary education sectors, including his current post as head of music at Marist College Ashgrove in Brisbane.In 2011, Andrew was awarded a Special Commendation Teacher Award at ASME XVIII National Conference by the Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth, Peter Garrett.

Andrew Butt performs at Bernie's Jazz & Piano Cafe tonight from 7pm. Entry is free.
