Cairns teenager follows dance dreams
HE started his dance career waltzing around the house with bottle tops tacked to the bottom of his joggers, but Cairns teenager Jordan Goodson is now on his way to taking the stage by storm.
Jordan, 15, will move to Melbourne with his mum, Rose Goodson, in 10 days to start a three-year scholarship at the prestigious Victoria College of the Arts Secondary School after a successful audition in August.
The talented all-rounder was headhunted by several high-calibre institutions last year, turning down offers from the Australian Ballet School, the Queensland National Ballet and Sydney's Brent Street.
Jordan, who has been a member of the Australian Ballet School's Interstate Training Program since the age of 10, said he was thrilled with his new opportunity.
"It's really exciting, a new start, new friends, a new school and a better dance education," he said.
"I trained really hard so I thought I'd get something out of it."
The former Redlynch State College student wants to keep his options open in his career.
"I want to try to work for a company in the future, teaching and choreography. I can't dance forever so I was thinking about getting into film or TV and dancing will help with that as well."
Jordan's mum, who sold her furniture last year in a bid to afford Jordan's interstate audition costs, said she never imagined his dance career taking off the way it has.
"He saw River Dance on television and he liked the sound coming from the taps," she said.
"He put bottle tops on his sandshoes and danced around the house. I looked in the Yellow Pages and called the first dance school I found."
"He didn't have a very good beginning and being a boy, he was put aside," she said.
"I'm unprepared for it but excited because he has potential. He is blessed, it's just him."
Ms Goodson and Jordan wish to thank the Cairns community for all their support.
