The colourful characters from Cairns Cosplay Club are hosting their first get-together of 2013 this Sunday.

For those not in the know, cosplay is inspired by the Japanese performance art of dressing up as your favourite anime, video game or film character.

The term was coined by Nobuyuki Takahashi of Japan's Studio Hard while attending the 1984 Los Angeles Science Fiction Worldcon and has since become one of Japan's favourite pastimes, particularly in the fashionable district of Harajuku in Shibuya, Tokyo.

In Harajuku, it's not odd to see "cosplayers" walking the streets on a regular day of the week, posing for photos and hanging with other "otaku", a Japanese word for members of anime and manga geek culture.

This Sunday's get-together kicks off at the City Place Soundshell from noon-1pm, followed by lunch at Orchid Plaza on Lake St.

A spokesperson for Cairns Cosplay Club said this Sunday was a chance for new and established members to have their say on how to expand the club and cosplay in Cairns in 2013.

"We would love to hear your ideas about what the Cairns Cosplay Club can do next," the spokesperson said. "We can all have a chat and share our thoughts."

Cairns Cosplay Club meet-up is this Sunday at City Place Soundshell from noon, followed by lunch at Orchid Plaza from 1pm. Costumes encourgared!
