EMERALD green will be the jewel in the fashion industry's crown this year, according to the Pantone Colour Institute.

Heralded as universally flattering, the colour made an appearance on catwalks and red carpets around the globe last year and is set to explode on the commercial market in 2013.

Cairns Central marketing manager and local fashionista Louise Struber said the popular hue would soon fill local stores.

Ms Struber said the jewel tone was particularly suited to Cairns' tropical environment.

"It is flattering in both warm and cool temperatures, and pops on a variety of different skin tones and eye colours.

"It can be worn with peach, rose, or aubergine for a complementary effect, or if you want a colour boost that is not overpowering you can wear it on your nails. Symbolically, emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal, and rejuvenation and is also a colour that really complements the tropics."

Mareeba's Sonlia Fashion designer Liana Hastie said she was incorporating the colour into her 2013 millinery and apparel collections.

"I have just completed a few millinery pieces in emerald green; it's a colour I've been using already," she said.
