Melbourne International Comedy Festival Class Clowns wants you
Are you the funniest kid in your class? Give your teacher a break and put your skills to good work in the Class Clowns 2013 teenage comedy competition.
The search is on again to find Australia's funniest high school student, with entries open for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival's annual Class Clowns competition.
Starting in February, professional comedians will hit the road to visit towns across Australia, to run a series of workshops to find the funniest teen in each Australian state and territory.
The cream of the teenage crop will then be flown to Melbourne to perform in front of a live audience on the main stage of the Class Clowns National Final, on April 19 during Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
Prizes include $1000 cash for themselves, another $1000 for their school and the prestigious Class Clown title for 2013.
Class Clowns is open to teenagers in Years 9-12 (or aged 14-18-years-old in 2013), and you can enter as either a solo act or group of up to three members. Entrants will be required to come up with their own original five-minutes of stand-up comedy, sketch, musical comedy or parody (or anything in between).
They will then take it to the workshop, where a yet-to-be-named Australian comedian will help you craft your show for the stage.
Class Clowns alumni includes names such as Tom Ballard (Triple J) and Josh Thomas (Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation).
Melbourne International Comedy Festival director Susan Provan says she looks forward to checking out this year's Class Clowns talent in action on the big stage in April.
"Every time I watch a comedian I hope to be surprised by a completely fresh and unexpected pathway to a big laugh.
Class Clowns participants routinely deliver what I hope for very funny, authentically original perspectives," she says.
"I'm proud the Melbourne Comedy Festival provides this great jumping-off platform for what promises to be a very exciting future of comedy."
