Mareeba's Aron Baynes linked with NBA's San Antonio Spurs
MAREEBA Olympian Aron Baynes looks set to become the second Taipans Academy graduate to play in the NBA, the hulking centre reported to have been bought by the San Antonio Spurs from Slovenian Euroleague club Union Olimpija.
Following a sterling performance for the Boomers at the London Games, Baynes was in the top 10 scorers and the top rebounder in the Euroleague before his side missed the top 16 qualification.
Overnight the internet was buzzing with news of the impending deal, but it is yet to be officially confirmed.
Baynes will follow Bamaga product and fellow Taipan Academy member Nathan Jawai into the NBA, with Jawai now playing for FC Barcelona.
The Mareeba 26-year-old would join Australian point guard Patty Mills and assistant coach Brett Brown at the Spurs.
"He's always been around the mark so to speak and opportunity is everything. Coach Brown is at the Spurs and Patty is there," Baynes’ former coach and current Taipans mentor Aaron Fearne said.
"But you don't get an NBA job for that. You've got to be able to play. They are a championship organisation and they see him as helping him be better.
"I was talking to my wife about it; to have two guys from here (Jawai and Baynes), from the environments they've come from is pretty special, we're all pretty proud of that."
More in tomorrow's The Cairns Post.
