A LOCAL business is taking a leaf out of the Gold Coast's book, launching a parking meter service with a difference.

The Hip Pocket Workwear & Safety meter maids will be gracing the streets of the CBD from next Saturday, lending a helping coin or two for drivers on the go.
Store manager Paul Pilgrim said he thought the time was right for a meter maid service in Cairns
"We first did it when we opened to get publicity but now, with the meters going up and the fines going up, we thought it would be a good time to bring them back out," Mr Pilgrim said.
"We want to make them a permanent fixture every Saturday morning."
Mr Pilgrim said while the store did not yet have a budget for the service, the maids would begin topping up meters outside Rusty's Markets for about three hours next Saturday.
"We'll do it all around the CBD, but around Rusty's will be popular," he said.
However, the maids will have to ensure they work within council by-laws, which prohibit continous feeding of a meter beyond the parking sign's specified time limit.
