CAIRNS alt-pop group The Medics have been crowned Best New Talent at the prestigious Rolling Stone Awards.

The four-piece, which formed in the Far North in 2007, last year released their debut album Foundations, which went on to reach 29th spot on the ARIA charts.

Fellow Aussie group Tame Impala, whose record has caused international critics to froth with praise, won the hearts of home-grown fans, with Lonerism crowned the Album of The Year at last night's award ceremony.

The band, whose second album topped almost every end-of-year list in the world, look set to dominate the charts for the rest of the year with their brand of out-there psychedelic-tinged rock.

Another Aussie chart-slayer, Gotye, added Music Video of The Year to his crowded trophy cabinet for Easy Way Out, the follow-up to his unstoppable Somebody That I Used To Know.

While they only just finished their successful Atlas tour, hardcore rockers Parkway Drive were recognised for their searing on-stage antics with the Live Act of The Year gong.

The perfect electronic pop stylings of The Presets also won favour with voters, who crowned their song Ghosts the Single of The Year.

Promoter and record label boss Michael Gudinski was recognised for his contributions to the Australian music industry with the Rolling Stone Award.

The awards night at the Beach Road Hotel in Bondi kicked off a big week for musicians in Australia, with many of the Big Day Out acts heading to the event to bond with fellow travellers.

The Rolling Stone Award: Michael Gudinski
