Far Northern resorts in elite company
EIGHT Far Northern hotels boasting luxurious getaways to idyllic locations have been included in the top 25 hotels in the nation.
TripAdvisor's 2013 Travellers' Choice Awards for hotels named six Port Douglas hotels and resorts on Lizard Island and at Kewarra Beach on the prestigious list.Coming in at No.5 was the secluded Lizard Island Resort located on the Great Barrier Reef. It has 24 white-sand beaches and 40 lavish suites.
"It's a very special place where people return every year," resort general manager Robyn Pontynen said.
"We are the only luxury resort located on the Great Barrier Reef we have excellent water quality and we don't get stingers."
Ms Pontynen said that with Europeans and Americans making up most of the clientele, the location, staff and personalised service were what took people back to the island.
Kewarra Beach Resort and Spa rated higher than plush hotels in Noosa, Sydney and Melbourne, with general manager Mark Carrette singing the praises of his 40 staff and the resort's beachfront position.
"It is incredibly important for an international profile, especially within the US market which follows TripAdvisor with great enthusiasm," Mr Carrette said.
The 30-year-old resort was also recognised in Fodor's 100 Hotel Awards for 2012 in the best local experience category.
Mr Carrette said travellers enjoyed the position of the resort in 8ha of rainforest.
TripAdvisor's Barbara Messing said the awards, now in their 11th year, identified the most outstanding properties worldwide.
"It's the insights from millions of travellers that make these awards so special, as they help others discover the hotels travellers love most whatever the budget in all corners of the world," she said.
Coconut Grove Apartments Port Douglas reservations manager Alicia Guy said it was fantastic to see six Port Douglas hotels making the list this year.
