Tour gouge crackdown in Cairns

TOURISTS in Cairns will be warned to avoid greedy tour desk operators if the operators don't heed a strict code of practice that promises to crack down on dodgy price gouging.

Tour desks have been accused of pocketing as much as 66 per cent of ticket prices in the past, which has crippled many local tourism businesses and made Cairns less affordable than rival destinations overseas.

After a year-long review of the industry, the State Government yesterday handed down a nine-point plan that will bring sweeping reforms to the unregulated practice of buying and selling tickets from tour desks.
