Cairns' big Lotto winner will be contacted today
A LUCKY Cairns Lotto winner will receive a call just after 9am today to let them know they are $2.2 million richer.
Edge Hill Newsagency sold the Division 1 ticket in Saturday night's Golden Casket Gold Lotto Super Draw.
The prize pool of $20 million was split among nine winners nationwide, the other of the two Queensland winners coming from Mirani, between Rockhampton and Mackay.
They each receive $2,222,222.23.
Newsagency owner Richard Hare said there had been a steady stream of hopefuls checking their tickets.
Golden Casket spokeswoman, Elissa Lewis, said the Cairns winning number was registered to a Winner's Circle card.
"We will be calling the winners to confirm their wins," he said.
"We always call them the first business day after the draw."
Golden Casket said the Cairns winner was an individual and not a syndicate.
Mr Harehad a sign outside advertising that his store had sold a $2.2 million winning ticket.
"People start to check their tickets furiously if there has been a big winner in Cairns," Mr Hare said.
"We have been checking quite a few tickets so there are quite a few hopeful people."
Though they were not winners, Mr Hare said they were not despondent.
"They know it is a game of chance," he said.
Mr Hare said the win was the biggest his newsagency had sold.
The previous highest was an $85,000 Powerball.
While the $2.2 million is not to be sniffed at, it is a long way short of the $27.9 million won by a Townsville family with young children last November in the Oz Lotto draw.
