IF A healthy sense of competition is the foundation of a good marriage, newlyweds Ben and Emma Hallas are on the right track.

The sporty pair tied the knot last month and are preparing to enjoy their first Valentine's Day as husband and wife.

And with Ben working for AFL Cairns and Emma a star netball player for Marlin Coast, the pair never knock back a chance to take each other on in the sporting arena.

"We never agree on anything when it comes to sport," Ben said.

"I'm a Geelong fan and Emma's a Carlton supporter. It can be a very tense couple of hours watching footy."

And despite the fact they play different sports, they still find plenty of ways to compete, whether it's playing bocce or board games.

"It's always a case of who can get part of the puzzle put together first," Ben said.

And while the couple are planning to celebrate Valentine's Day by going out for dinner, don't expect them to return to the golf course any time soon.

"We played recently and she chipped one in from 20m and hasn't stopped telling me about it," Ben said.
