A CHINESE tourist has died following a snorkelling trip to the Great Barrier Reef on Tuesday.

The 46-year-old man had been travelling with his wife when he got into difficulty while snorkeling at Moore Reef and had to be pulled from the water around 4pm.

The man was conscious when brought aboard the Quicksilver vessel he had been travelling on, but died while being transported to Cairns Base Hospital via helicopter.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner over the incident and the Chinese embassy has been notified.
